This means that two things are completely opposite.

A. Which is a better place to live, China or Switzerland?
B. That's like comparing apples and oranges . For me, because I speak English, Switzerland would be the better place to live.
Example 2
A. Which is more useful? A pick-up truck or a sports car?
B. That's comparing apples and oranges. Since we live in Tokyo, I would say a sports car is more useful.
